A decent sized pack for the AH4 2016 Xmas trail set around the Churnet Valley in Staffordshire. Rain in the previous 24 hours (shame it wasn't snow) made this a very shiggy run in parts and faded the flour made checking false trails challenging. Nobody went missing and there were plenty of opportunities for shortcutters and walkers alike. The hares showed no Christmas spirit on the false trails which were long and, more often than not, uphill or downhill. At times the flour was hid like parcels under the Christmas tree. This had to be a very a good run as it included a mince pie and mulled wine stop, signed as "mpn" (mince pies near). On the trail, somewhere in the wood, we also passed a grotto with a Christmas theme, though the hares probably had nothing to do with this.

Alas, at the Ramblers Retreat there was no room at this On Inn on account of the numerous festive diners. Instead, we moved up the road to the Alton Bridge Hotel where the hares had booked us a table. On arrival we went straight into the hash circle at which awards were made ranging from an excellent ale to water with ice cubes. First off was Totem Pole welcomed back to AH4 after a long while, as was Smutley. We also had a newcomer, an experienced hasher with dog running his first UK trail. Welcome Rabid Sheep Shagger. Wriggle and Jo were late arriving in the circle (cleaning the dog?) and Enema, Skids and Malteaser were offered sweeties by the RA to dob in sinners in the circle. Malteaser was dobbed for walking too fast on the walkers' trail. Hares Mama Rose and ASB were thanked for setting and excellent trail with mince pie stop and mulled wine. Horse's Arse was deemed to be today's FRB which left Diarrhoea as today's NODDY (Not Offered a DD Yet) and he had to drink what was left - unfortunately for him just a cold fizzy coke.

AH4 Run 65. Old Dog, Thorpe, near Ashbourne

For today's trail we returned to the Old Dog Inn in Thorpe, except it was called the Dog and Partridge when we were here last. That was on 3rd January 2011 (AH4 Run 16, ASB and Mama Rose hares). They've done a really great job revitalising and renovating this pub - excellent real ales, very friendly and courteous staff  and good food. I must include this in my itinary next time I'm on the Tissington Trail which runs close by.
Surprisingly we didn't touch the Tissington trail today, the hares (ASB and Hash Puppy) uncharacteristically choosing a less level route heading out towards Dovedale. R*nners (though there wasn't a lot of that today) were compulsorily sent over the top of the 'mountain' that is Thorpe Cloud, whilst walkers were given the option of going around it. I choose the latter but Malteaser choose to go up and over. The hare did confess to me that no flour was to be found on Thorpe Cloud itself, and the sheep could readily take the blame for this! One Loose was the first 'r*nner' to arrive at the famous Dovedale stepping stones, surprising followed closely by a walking Malteaser. Road Kill, Wriggle, MK3 hasher Enema and Joanna arrived sometime after, all hashers choosing to ignore the bar on the first stepping stone. 
We had the unusual occurrence of seeing Blitzen (and child) on the trail having arrived at this popular tourist spot mainly by car. The only one missing was the Co-hare (Hash Puppy) who sensibly chose to look after the car rather than do the trail twice. The fish hook was obediently observed by four rather than three as instructed, probably on account of the fact that the hare was at the back of the pack only about 20 metres down the hill.

ON Up, Up, Up......

As is a custom with the AH4, the majority choose to have lunch at the ON INN and the circle had to wait. When the circle did get going we left the warmth of the pub for the large barn area which doubled up as a cycle shed. Awards were given to:
1. Malteaser (hashy birthday);
2. Enema and Joanna, a welcome back from Milton Keynes and a virgin hasher/visitor respectively;
3. One Loose, today's keenest checker (the other Road Kill had already gone home);
4. Blitzen for a rare appearance well into the hash trail;
5. I thought Enema and Joanna were friends but it didn't stop Enema dobbing in Joanna for lost property, resulting in Joanna getting a second DD; and
6. The hares ASB and Hash Puppy were thanked for a lovely trail.  

Today reminded me why the AH4 is a special hash with its trails set in the wonderful scenery of the Peak District and the care taken to accommodate walkers as part of the pack. I was able to appreciate this today during what was for myself a rare walking of a hash trail. 
There'll be a Christmas trail in December (probably Saturday 10th December) so we hope to see many more of our 'members' next month!

AH4 Run 64. The Water Bridge, Uttoxeter

Today the AH4 reassembled itself for a trail around Uttoxeter set by Wriggle. We arrived in the rain, it rained even more during the run but I do believe it had stopped by the time we went home. I was reminded many times that it was the responsibility of the Religious Adviser (i.e. me) to ensure good weather. I had to explain that the subscription for 'sunny dry weather' on the first Saturday of every month had now expired, and, as the AH4 hadn't been running regularly, I hadn't renewed.
Within the first mile I was well and truly wet through, mainly due to soakings from passing cars. The flour stuck surprising well and we did manage to follow the trail all the way around. This included a visit to Adam Peaty's street bedecked with union jacks plus a short excursion to see the Adams' Family home. Only the thunder and lightning was missing. We ticked off the list of all the things the hare warned us about - stinging nettles, shiggy and a long flight of broken steps. 

After an absence of AH4 trails for 11 months everyone was a welcome back. However, One Loos got the DD as a welcome back - we did do a farewell to him and his family several years ago when he went off to New Zealand. Now they're back again. We also had two hashers from the Rutland Hash - Bummer and Canary Boy - the latter running his first AH4 trail. Both were welcomed to our hash. There was a 'river' crossing on the trail. Usually we punish those that cross bars to keep their feet dry but today it was easier to reward Jelly Knob with a DD for strictly following hash rules, rather than punish all those (i.e. everyone else) that didn't. The mismanagement committee namely, Andean Sex Beast, received an award for only managing to organise one trail in the last eleven months. Hash Puppy was one of two that did a shorter version of the trail (guess who the second was?) and she received a DD for that. Finally, the hare Wriggle was thanked for a good trail which, despite the heavy rain, was laid well enough for us to find flour all the way around and nobody got lost. It was of good length too, most recording 7+ miles. Road Kill and Malteaser missed awards though the latter did 'shortcut' back but still managed to do 7 miles..

trail with a beer and food stop. Opportunities for stream crossings were taken at every opportunity as were deviations from the main path. With just two hounds running (Wriggle and myself) we had to work hard at the checks, and we did seem to be checking out most of the false trails. Horse's Arse was the 'sweeping hare' but didn't give us much help - he misled us for half-a-mile at the first check!

Following an enjoyable fish & chips a quick circle was held outside the pub where the hares were thanked for their effort and an excellent trail.

AH4 Run 62. The Dapple Grey, Uttoxeter

After a summer holiday break in August, the AH4 resumed its monthly hash in Uttoxeter. GM Horse's Arse welcomed everyone to Run 62. Frightening to think that the summer has passed us by already.

The pack size was made respectable by a welcome back from the Dubai Hash (Ratchet) and three newcomers from the Uttoxeter R*nners who had come along to see what hashing was about (Jennifer, Sarah and Kay).  Kay was accompanied by Ian who kept appearing at different points around the trail in his car so maybe we should put him down as the 12th member of today's hash.

The trail had several points were paths were used twice. One of these was at the ON OUT where Ratchet and myself headed out in one direction and everyone else the opposite way, all on the flour. Encountering the ON INN markings on the path I was just about to return to GO when the pack went past at the top of the road. Further on, 4.5 miles along the trail (see GPS map trace), I found flour a long way down a check on a path we'd previously run and I very nearly got stuck in a continuous loop. Fortunately I noticed no one had followed me and I rejoined the pack in the correct direction some time later. As we headed home towards the Bridge, Diarrhoea had a feeling of deja vu, correctly so as the the hare was reusing that part of the trail twice.

We all arrived back more-or-less at the same time, including Enema who must have got a tip-off from Diarrhoea that it was time to leave B&Q.

In the circle the RA gave Ratchet a welcome back Down-Down (DD) closely followed by Diarrhoea who served as an example to the athletes that we frown on competitive running - he arrived back first on today's trail. The three newcomers had softie DDs, practice obviously needed in this department. Enema's appearance from the direction of the retail park did not go unpunished, though Moist's miscall down a false trail did.

The hare was congratulated on a good run that ultimately didn't loose anyone or confuse anyone (too much). Thanks Wriggle for a good trail enjoyed by all. Even the cows gave Horse's Arse a break from their intimidation.

There was widespread consensus that someone called Andean Sex Beast, not seen since January, should set the next trail!

AH4 Run 61. Raddles Inn, Hollington

After a night of spectacular thunderstorms we were all greatly relieved to find the hare had not set the trail the day before. Usual collections of invalids this week, notably Captain Oates (bad knee) and Road Pick-up (bad shoulder). A physio was required - enter hare Moist. But did they feel any better after the hash trail? Captain Oates limped around most of the way and said it still hurt though Road Pick-up now had distraction injuries caused by brambles to worry about. Diarrhoea tried electric shock treatment near the start of the trail by running straight into an electric fence - we were warned!
This hash visited Horse's Arse's (HA) worst nightmare, field after field of high density cattle. One extra calf had been born during the course of setting the run. With careful shepherding of the cattle and a few diversions HA did make it around the trail.

A cultural check at Croxton Abbey

Near the start we were treated to a cultural stop, the ruins of Croxton Abbey where Malteaser, Road Pick-up, Pyschojellic, HA and Crooked Squire posed for a photo. Diarrhoea gave the culture a miss and had already done the next check, even taking the time to come back and mark it.
Nearing the end, obviously short-cutting, Moist and Captain Oates were caught on a long tarmac uphill section. Captain Oates made a pictorial record of the FRBs running uphill. With  Pyschojellic, Diarrhoea and Crooked Squire all pushing hard I was obliged to keep running.

Diarrhoea continued his exemplary hashing behaviour by following the correct On Inn trail to the Raddles Inn. I on the otherhand invoked hash rule 7g that says if the On Inn is signposted then such signs can over-rule all hash markings as it is the hashers duty to get back to the pub as quickly as possible.
The Raddles Inn was an excellent hash venue serving good real ales and it was nice to have the use of a large beer garden in the summer weather. For future reference it was noted the pub had log cabins, campsite and a bouncy castle.
The relatively small circle was able to fit around one picnic table and was again captured by photo as a reflection in Malteaser's sun glasses by Captain Oates.

DDs were given to: (1) Captain Oates (invalid); (2) Diarrhoea, sinner or saint?;

(3) Competitive hashers, Crooked Squire (first back) and Durex (running uphill to keep in front of Diarrhoea); (4) Leftovers Malteaser and Road Pick-up; and finally (5) the hare Moist for an excellent trail. Moist set a very high standard of haring for her first trail and didn't disappoint this time around. Good choice for an On Inn, plenty of obscure and infrequently used public footpaths and an interesting viewing of Croxton Abbey ruins.

AH4 Run 60. Red Lion, Hognaston

This was Pyscojellic's first hare employing the Durex consultancy on how to lay a hash trail. Not only does Pyscojellic set a well recced trail but she also serves up a pretty good breakfast. Early arrivals found Durex and Pyscojellic tucking into croissants, chocolate chip cookies, bananas with tea and coffee.

The trail wound around the back end of Hognaston, after the first mile crossed the main road some 200 m up the the pub. The trail was deemed to be hilly and with long grass in many fields the going was slow. Moist was observed fastidiously checking whilst Crooked Squire, more subdued that usual, did't run the length or number of checks he normally does. Horse's Arse decided to give the field of cows a miss and was the only one who took up one of the many short-cuts on offer.

Although this was a trail under 5 miles it still took the pack more than 1.5 hours to 'run', obviously missing the checking skills of the A-team. Wallington running his first AH4 trail for a while confused everyone when he came to the one fish-hook on the trail interpreting it as a back check and wandering off-trail. Jelly Knob was the only hasher prepared to run the fish-hook though by the time the pack had worked out what Wallington was up to the hares had already arrived. Wallington also had his best pink T-Shirt plus a whistle which between them offended several people on the hash.

Nice to see a couple of visitors/returners. There was the Milton Keynes Enema and Caboose currently on a working assignment in Derby. Just as well our own Diarrhoea and Enema were absent otherwise it would have been a very loose run.

Durex held a quick circle, punishing Wallington first for his pink T shirt and annoying whistle. Caboose (visitor) and Enema (returner) were welcomed in the traditional manner followed by Moist (checking the bits others didn't want to do) and Pyscojellic for an excellent effort on her first haring of a hash trail. Horse's Arse was given the remaining beer for being a 'cow magnet', they seem to sense his fear. Wriggle fulfilled the obligation of her free T-Shirt advertising the Nash Hash weekend at the end of August - registrations still open.

Many of the pack retired into the Red Lion's conservatory for lunch, though Malteaser managed to set the tone for the meal by ripping off the door handle. Meals were over-priced, soft drinks ridiculously expensive and it was service without a smile.

QH3 Run 864/AH4 Run 59. Holly Bush Inn, Makeney

After a week with lots of rain this was a hash trail of great shigginess run in mild conditions with the sun making an appearance towards the end. Being a joint run between QH3 and AH4 there were three hares - Malteaser, Skids and Durex. The latter hare started the pack off from the Holly Bush whilst the others were still away laying Easter eggs and the trail.

B*gger got the first handful of checks right, but, as usual, Horse's Arse and Crooked Squire were frequently seen returning back from false trails. After less than a mile an Easter Egg check brought the pack together. Some 20 small Easter eggs had been hidden away, most were found and eaten though Goblin carefully carried her eggs around the trail. Too Tuf did much better in the egg hunt this year so Chicki was happy.

Not for the first time this month, a hash in this area attracted the attention of dog walkers (see link). I do have sympathy with dog walkers being concerned about a white powder. We do tend to lay flour at lamp posts and trees where dogs usually deposit a far more toxic substance. But is it beyond their intelligence to work out that the flour is marking a trail for people to follow? Sad to think some are so paranoid to believe someone has laid a five mile trail of dog poison, carefully arranged as a circles in some places.

 Skids and Malteaser were spotted going around the trail by car when the pack arrived at the long/short split. Wallington and Chicki took the shorter option and so missed the long stretches of ankle deep shiggy. As this was also an Ashbourne trail the hares made sure there was at least one fish hook which Horse's Arse and Jelly Knob respected though Crooked Squire waited for the hare to arrive at the fish hook rather than running all the way to the back of the pack.

It was a busy but pleasant pub for the On Inn with an excellent selection of beers and pub snacks. Goblin provided us all with shortcake hash feet. Too Tuf led the circle awarding DDs to:
1. Bummer for leaving a big impression in the mud (big foot);
2. Durex - slave to technology, his GPS telling him when to walk or run;
3. Lightening Rod, for the need to always to check false trails with a friend;
4. Newcomer to the Quorn/Ashbourne hashes K2 (who drove here when it would have been shorter to walk) and Horse's Arse who came on his bike - eco-warriors;
5. Goblin (who had already done the park run with B*gger earlier in the day) was thanked for the shortcake feet;
6. Crooked Squire for his reluctance to run out the fish hook;
7. Barritone for his performance in traversing the worst of the shiggy; 
8. Jelly Knob who ran the trail after a foot operation, fortunately it wasn't an open festering sore; and
9. After a secret ballot, the hares - Durex, Malteaser and Skids - were thanks for a good run awarded something under 50%.

AH4 Run 58. The Shire Horse, Wyaston

The sky was blue, the wind a bit chilly when exposed, but it certainly felt like spring. A very select pack of just seven set out at eleven, though, as will be revealed later, the pack of hounds

increased substantially as we went around. In the absence of the usual FRBs some hashers found themselves having to do a lot of checking. Crooked Squire, having cycled 16 miles to get here, certainly did his fair share of checking the false trails. When we got to the the short-long split, the hare (me) deemed that nobody qualified to do the shorter trail. This was a real shame as I'd run an extra 2 miles to mark this earlier in the day.

Just past the halfway mark we arrived in the outskirts of Osmaston where a scenic check was marked outside the watermill. Our arrival in Osmaston coincided with the start of the hunt. We had the bizarre sight of the hounds and horses being chased by the hare and hounds. Not sure what the four-legged hounds were chasing but they followed our trail for some way out of Osmaston. Twice we caught them up whilst their hounds sought out the scent. It certainly increased the number of hounds running this trail to an unprecedented large number. As we returned to the village of Wyaston the normally quite country roads were busy with a another pack seeking out the hunt, those in cars trying to keep up with the hunt.

I felt a bit of a social outcast as I didn't meet anyone on this run (hashers excepted) that I knew. Crooked Squire stopped to chat to some fellow 'athletes' of his acquaintance, Wriggle knew several of those following the hunt, as did Moist who looked as though she was doing a bit of curb crawling when we arrived at the On Inn.
The circle was short and quick so we could get on with eating. Crooked Squire got a DD as sustenance for his cycle journey home and Moist for the aforementioned curb crawling. The trail was declared a good run with a special mention of the excellent weather and the added bonus of running with the hunt.

AH4 Run 57, The Tavern, Denstone

Into Staffordshire for Moist's virgin haring. We might have expected a nice safe trail, but not so.

On a lovely winter's day we were joined by newcomers Steve and Carol and, although we have run from this location before, much of the trail was new to us. Heading out towards Denstone College we passed along shiggy tracks though with much of the mud still frozen it didn't hinder our progress. Two fish hooks did, the second being a the bottom of a very steep hill. Who trained this hare!
This was a long trail but well laid and planned. I did 8 miles (including the two fish hooks and many checks), others averaged between 6 - 7 miles. The walkers (ASB, NonRunner and Mama Rose plus two hounds) were given a shorter option but still got their monies worth. To think the hare set this in the morning and then went around again. Moist will be feeling that tomorrow.
A quick circle was held inside before food arrived. We started with the hare who received many accolades for her first outing as hare. Fish hooks out of the ASB school of fish hook placement and diligently laying two blobs of flour along most false trails.
DDs also went to: ASB and Durex for hashy birthdays this month; Steve and Carol - newcomers; Jelly Knob for using maps on his phone around the trail and taking the 4th fish hook position for Malteaser; Mama Rose and Non Runner were welcomed back, the latter losing his glove but not his memory; Diarrhoea was given a drink to stop his constant stream of puns and one liners; and finally B*gger and Goblin's athletic morning was acknowledged - they'd both done a Park Run before doing this trail. Goblin missed out on a DD because the DD drinks were exhausted so she joined Malteaser and Horse's Arse as hashers who missed out on a DD.

AH4 Run 56. The Horns, Ashbourne

So here we go again for another hash year - the first hash trail of 2015 for us was the AH4 run from The Horns, in Ashbourne. At short notice Road Pickup had been made the hare for this event and for her the weather was, as it usually is for runs she sets, very wet. That's the wonder of hashing for you. Why else would you go out on a cold wet Saturday January morning for a run when it would be much nicer doing other things somewhere warmer and drier? The hare recommends self-raising flour for wet weather, I would suggest rice flour may feel more at home in paddy-field conditions.
The pay-and-display machine was broken so we got to park for free in a town not known for its easy parking. The pack huddled together sheltering from the rain in the entrance to The Horns waiting for Skids and Elly to find the pub. Horse's Arse recounted the hand injury inflicted on the last trail, now healing and unaffecting his ability to run. After knee surgery ASB was also present but, with the setting still in slow mode, she was the only walker of the day.
We may have thought the hare would set an easy trail for us being just after Christmas and the weather being so miserable. This was not the case. We got a 5+ mile trail with lots of up-and-downs and plenty of shiggy, a route that took me to parts of Ashbourne I'd not been before, including a few more obscure alleyways I never knew were there.

Today there were no subs collected (Hash Cash was absent!) and we had hash chips and numerous goodies borne by various hashers. This included Jelly Babies brought by Steve at which point the conversation deteriorated regarding the anatomy of the said Jelly Babies. This led very indirectly to Steve getting his hash name today - welcome to the hash Jelly Knob. We warmed to the jelly theme and decided we should also name Elly - Physio Jellic.
Elly had previously received a welcome back with ASB. Malteaser also received a DD for ignoring the fish hook. The hare Road Pickup received the 'good run' accolade and was thanked for setting an excellent trail
Moist has volunteered to do the next run (No 57 again) from the Tavern in Denstone and with Durex setting the March trail we're well set for the start of the hashing year.

This was a small pack with the RA Durex away in Liverpool with other hashers and ASB making some excuse about a poorly knee. At least the GM Horse's Arse turned up.

AH3 @ Blacksmith's Arms. Eventful day: big group of 4, the GM (that's me) fell over and split hand open, hare got lost and arrived 30 minutes after we all got back. On on!



Later questioning of the hare would suggest the first bit of the trail was the best part but it did go downhill from there, some excuse about a new hotel being built where a path should have been. Pitty nobody got as far as the monorail ride. The trail as done by Horse's Arse looks remarkable!

AH4 Run 54. Bramshall Road Park, Uttoxeter

RUN #54

Those travelling from the north and east of the hash location would have come through dull misty drizzle. This was not the weather forecast for today! Fortunately for the RA, arriving at Bramshall Road Park it was dry but overcast. Moist arrived just on time for the run but was nervous about being allowed to park without paying. GM Horse's Arse was present to welcome us all to RUN 54 (note to ASB about her run numbering errors) and confuse the pack with his explanation of hash markings. We have to remember Wriggle uses the cross to mean, very logically, 'cross here' on a busy road.
This was a long Wriggle trail, a runners run (I recorded 8.5 miles) so I enjoyed it. It would have also suited virgin hasher Steve, a struggling athlete. There were short-cuts and a walkers trail, so everyone was kept happy. Perhaps with the exception of One Loose who arrived late and started going around backwards where the On Out and On Inn crossed over. Indeed the marked On Inn was long, particularly when there was already 7.8 miles on the clock.
The main part of the hash, the circle and social bit, was held a mile down the road at the Old Bramshall Inn. With food arriving, a rapid circle was held inside.
DDs included Mickleover Hash GM Dobber (welcome back after a long absence); newcomer Steve (also cautioned about use of words such as racing and winning and using mobile phone in the circle); Diarrhoea (usual not wearing fleece for running); Moist (criminal recently fined for parking offence); Captain Oates (for attending today's hash rather than doing  a recce for his Quorn Hash tomorrow); and One Loose (welcome back, arriving late and going around backwards). The latter also confessed to soon disappearing off to New Zealand with his family - so a temporary farewell?
The hare got a vote of 42% for the trail and was thanked for a good run.
